Ethical and Legal Concerns
When I first entered the counseling program, my understanding of ethical and legal standards in the counseling profession was very limited. I had a general awareness that counselors were expected to follow certain rules and uphold confidentiality, but I didn’t yet comprehend the depth and seriousness of ethical decision-making in practice. That changed significantly once I enrolled in the Ethical and Legal Considerations course. This class introduced me to the ACA Code of Ethics, as well as the legal responsibilities counselors are required to uphold. At first, the amount of information was overwhelming. It wasn’t just about memorizing rules, it was about learning how to apply those standards in real-world situations where there is often no clear right or wrong answer.
One of the most valuable aspects of the course was working through case studies that presented realistic ethical dilemmas. These scenarios required me to analyze the situation, identify my conflicting values or responsibilities, and apply an ethical decision-making model to determine my course of action. Learning to slow down and think critically through each step helped me develop more confidence in my ability to respond ethically under pressure. Having to articulate the rationale behind my decisions allowed me to better understand the gray areas of ethical practice and recognize the importance of reflection, consultation, and clarity when facing difficult choices. These case study experiences were instrumental in preparing me for real-life ethical challenges in clinical settings.
This preparation became especially important during the second week of my practicum experience, when I was faced with my first major legal and ethical dilemma. Without sharing specifics, I can say that it involved serious concerns and required me to act swiftly and carefully while considering both my legal obligations and what was ethically in the client's best interest. The situation was uncomfortable, stressful, and far from straightforward, but it also turned out to be a defining moment in my development as a counselor-in-training. With the support of my supervisor and guidance from the code of ethics, I was able to navigate it responsibly and professionally. That early experience helped me build resilience and confidence in my ability to handle ethical challenges. Since then, I have encountered other situations that required careful ethical consideration, and I have approached them with much greater clarity and composure. I also embrace my role as a mandated reporter in the state of Texas and have completed formal training in this area, receiving a certificate as proof of my preparedness.
I now view ethics not just as a set of rules to follow, but as an ongoing commitment. I have learned that ethical competence is not about having all the answers, but about knowing where to turn, asking the right questions, seeking supervision, and grounding decisions in the core principles of the profession. As I continue in my training and future career, I am committed to staying informed about evolving laws, policies, and ethical codes that affect the field. I will regularly consult the ACA Code of Ethics and engage in continuing education to remain current and competent. Most importantly, I will strive to uphold the six foundational principles of ethical counseling: autonomy, nonmaleficence, beneficence, justice, fidelity, and veracity. These values not only guide my professional conduct but also reflect the kind of counselor I aspire to be, someone who acts with honesty, care, and a sense of responsibility toward the clients I serve.
